Make a full loaf of cold process soap from scratch. Lye safety, trace, scenting, and curing all covered.
1. Put on safety goggles and gloves. Work in a well-ventilated area.
2. Measure 12 oz distilled water in a heat-resistant container.
3. Measure 4.8 oz sodium hydroxide (lye) using a digital scale.
4. Slowly add the lye to the water while stirring with a stainless steel spoon until fully dissolved. Let cool to 100°F.
5. Weigh 16 oz olive oil, 16 oz coconut oil, and 16 oz palm oil in separate containers.
6. Melt the coconut oil and palm oil in a microwave or double boiler until fully liquid. Combine with the olive oil in a large mixing bowl.
7. Check the temperature of the oils; they should be around 100°F. Slowly pour the lye solution into the oils while stirring continuously with a stick blender.
8. Blend until trace is reached (the mixture thickens and leaves a trail on the surface).
9. Add 1 oz of essential oil for scent and mix thoroughly.
10. Pour the soap mixture into a lined loaf mold, smoothing the top with a spatula.
11. Cover the mold with a towel and let it sit undisturbed for 24-48 hours to harden.
12. After 48 hours, remove the soap from the mold and cut into bars. Cure the bars in a cool, dry place for 4-6 weeks before use.
