End Grain Cutting Board
Glue up a checkerboard end grain board that's kind to your knives. Covers grain orientation, clamping, and food-safe finish.
Instructions
1. Cut twelve 2x2 in hardwood pieces to 24 in length (e.g., maple, walnut, or cherry).
2. Arrange the pieces in a checkerboard pattern, alternating the wood types.
3. Apply wood glue (Titebond III) evenly on one side of each piece before assembly.
4. Press the pieces together to form the checkerboard pattern, ensuring tight joints.
5. Use 24 in bar clamps to secure the board, applying even pressure across the surface.
6. Allow the glue to cure for at least 4 hours, or according to the glue manufacturer's instructions.
7. Remove the clamps and sand the board with 120 grit sandpaper, followed by 220 grit for a smooth finish.
8. Cut the board to the final dimensions of 18x24 in if necessary, ensuring straight edges.
9. Apply a food-safe finish (e.g., mineral oil or beeswax) generously, allowing it to soak in for at least 30 minutes before wiping off excess.
