Dye fabric with avocado pits, onion skins, and indigo. Mordant, dye bath, and rinse for a set of naturally colored napkins or a scarf.
1. Collect 4 cotton napkins, each measuring 18x18 inches.
2. Prepare the mordant by dissolving 1/4 cup of alum in 1 quart of hot water. Stir until fully dissolved.
3. Soak the cotton napkins in the mordant solution for 1 hour. Remove and rinse with cold water.
4. For the avocado dye, pit 4 avocados and place the pits in a pot with 4 quarts of water. Simmer for 1 hour, then strain out the pits.
5. For the onion skin dye, collect 1 cup of onion skins and add to a separate pot with 4 quarts of water. Simmer for 1 hour, then strain out the skins.
6. For the indigo dye, follow the product's directions to prepare the indigo dye bath, ensuring to wear gloves and a mask for safety.
7. Submerge one napkin in the avocado dye bath for 30 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Repeat with the onion skin dye and then the indigo dye, allowing each napkin to soak for the same duration.
8. After dyeing, rinse all napkins in cold water until the water runs clear, then hang to dry.
