Piece a lap-sized throw from simple squares, then quilt and bind it. No triangles, no curves, no pattern needed.
1. Cut 12 squares of cotton fabric, each 10x10 inches, in assorted colors and patterns.
2. Lay out the squares in a 3x4 grid to determine the arrangement.
3. Sew the squares together in rows using a sewing machine with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
4. Press the seams open with an iron set to cotton heat.
5. Sew the rows together to complete the quilt top, ensuring seams align.
6. Cut a piece of batting to 45x60 inches and a backing fabric to the same size.
7. Layer the batting, backing (right side down), and quilt top (right side up) together.
8. Pin the layers in place with safety pins, spacing them about 6 inches apart.
9. Quilt through all layers using a sewing machine, stitching in the ditch along the seams or creating a simple pattern.
10. Trim any excess batting and backing fabric to match the quilt top.
11. Cut 2.5-inch strips of fabric for the binding, enough to make approximately 160 inches of binding.
12. Sew the binding strips together end to end, press in half lengthwise, and attach to the edges of the quilt.
13. Fold the binding over the raw edges and sew it down by hand or machine to finish the quilt.
