Set and grout a tile backsplash behind a stove or sink. Notched trowel, spacers, wet saw rental, and sealer.
1. Measure and mark the area for the backsplash on the wall using a level and pencil.
2. Cut the tiles to fit the area using a wet saw; cut 12 tiles to 6 in x 6 in and 4 tiles to 3 in x 6 in.
3. Mix thin-set mortar according to the product's directions in a bucket.
4. Using a notched trowel (1/4 in), spread a layer of thin-set mortar on the wall, covering an area slightly larger than the first tile.
5. Press the first tile into the mortar, twisting slightly to ensure a good bond, and insert spacers between tiles for even gaps.
6. Continue placing tiles, using spacers, until the entire area is covered; allow the mortar to set for 24 hours.
7. Remove spacers and mix grout according to the product's directions in a separate bucket.
8. Using a grout float, apply the grout diagonally across the tiles, filling all gaps and wiping excess grout off the tile surface with a damp sponge.
9. Allow the grout to cure for the time specified on the package, typically 24 hours.
10. Apply a tile sealer according to the product's directions to protect the grout and tiles.
