Worm Composting Bin

Instructions

1. Cut a 10-gallon plastic storage bin to create air holes: drill 1/4 in holes spaced 4 inches apart on the lid and sides.

2. Line the bottom of the bin with a layer of newspaper, shredded into strips, about 1 inch thick.

3. Add 2 cups of coconut coir, soaked in water and squeezed to remove excess moisture, on top of the newspaper.

4. Add 1 cup of crushed eggshells evenly over the coir for calcium.

5. Introduce 1 lb of red wiggler worms (Eisenia fetida) into the bin, ensuring they are evenly distributed.

6. Feed the worms 1 cup of kitchen scraps (vegetable peels, coffee grounds) every week, burying the scraps under the bedding to minimize odors.

7. Maintain moisture in the bin by checking weekly; if it feels dry, lightly mist with water until damp but not soggy.

8. Place the bin under the sink and monitor for odors; if any arise, add more bedding or reduce feeding.
